Academic & Learning Programs
Our programs strive to deliver meaningful and formative learning experiences to refugee children, youth, and adults. We do our best to meet students where they are and help them move forward in their learning journeys. While we are not a formal school or educational institution, we do provide opportunities for students to earn recognized credentials that open access to further educational or vocational opportunities.
Foundations
Lower Primary to Secondary
Social-emotional learning and daily classes in Math, English, and Bahasa Indonesia
-
Our Foundations program is the original core program of Roshan Learning Center. Foundations provides daily classes from primary through secondary levels to children. Core subjects include English (or literacy), Bahasa Indonesia, math, and soft skills. Classes focus on building foundational literacy and numeracy skills and supporting the social-emotional development needs of children, most of whom have had little or no formal education. In recent years, Foundations has also served as a bridge to Roshan’s Elite Open School or GED Prep programs.
Elite Open School at Roshan
13 - 18+ Years Old
An accredited blended learning school for grades 6-13, leading to a U.S. high school diploma.
-
Roshan is one of two refugee learning centers in Indonesia to partner with Elite Open School (EOS), which provides a pathway to earning a formally recognized U.S. high school degree for students. As students work through curriculum and assignments delivered online from Elite Open School, Roshan provides a local support system to help them succeed. Roshan provides study space, in-person tutoring and study hall sessions, and day to day supervision. The Roshan EOS program is generously sponsored by our partner, Elite Education Group.
GED Prep
18+ Years Old
A test preparation program for adult students, leading to the U.S. GED high school credential
-
The Roshan GED Prep program helps young adults ages 16 and above prepare for a series of tests leading to a U.S. GED (General Education Development) high school equivalency diploma. Students prepare for four subject tests through a combination of self-study, weekly classes, and tutoring provided by Roshan. The program also facilitates formal testing at an approved GED Test Center and covers testing costs for participating students. Many “GED graduates” move onto higher education, vocational opportunities (such as internships), and volunteer service in Roshan learning centers.
Saturday Tutoring Program
-
Roshan provides optional tutoring to Foundations students who are struggling academically or have learning difficulties. Volunteer tutors are paired with students and meet them weekly on Saturday mornings. This program has been a critical support to the Foundations program, where classes are grouped by age and often have a very wide range of learning levels and abilities.
Social-Emotional Learning (SEL)
-
We are continuously integrating social-emotional learning across our programming for children and youth (Foundations and Elite Open School). The goal of SEL integration is to strengthen the resilience and social-emotional skills of students, especially as they face the daily challenges of life. Many of our youth bear significant responsibility for caring for their families, and others are unaccompanied minors (without parents or guardians) who must transition to independent living once they turn 18.
Higher Education Initiatives
-
Roshan has piloted several initiatives to open access to accredited higher education for refugees in Indonesia. One pilot with Sampoerna University established a pathway for Roshan graduates and other refugees to join a dual degree program and earn a U.S. associates degree locally in Indonesia. Another pilot with LCC International University led to two Roshan graduates departing successfully as international students to Lithuania, opening a new complementary pathway to the EU. Roshan is currently in a phase of evaluating next steps and capacity for developing further higher education initiatives or more robust guidance counseling support to our students.
